As I’ve mentioned, I started playing Old School Essentials with my kids as their first entry to D&D which is based on BX D&D. Moving to 5.5e D&D has been great but there’s some things that I don’t like or I think need some tweaking to bring things a bit closer to old school D&D.
So I accidentally thought it would be a good idea to keep track of those things and then write about what I’ve done to “correct” them.
Please keep in mind that these are things that I feel need adjusting in some way. I accept and expect that others will not feel the same about probably any of the things I’ll mention and that ok. If anything I think needs changing in some way offends you then I politely suggest that it’s time to turn off your Internet device of choice and go outside for a bit and maybe find a dog to play with.
On to the list which will grow I’m sure!
Things I Need to Make More Like BX D&D or Otherwise “Fix”
- The ranger. All of it. Well most of it.
- The barbarian. It’s a sub-species of human not a damn class. Goldmoon and Riverwind are a barbarian cleric and ranger respectively. Conan is a barbarian fighter/thief.
- Not every class or sub-class needs magic shoved down its throat.
- It’s not “gritty” enough.
- Characters are way too OP at lower levels.
- The Mage creature templates. All of them.
