Failed Death Save

I Thought I’d Write Something Brief and Probably Pointless

Copying posts from Blogger is a bit of a pain on an iPad (don’t ask, it will be over soon) so I thought I’d write something instead.

There’s been, much like burrahobbits, both lots of things and nothing at all happening. Here’s a small sample of things LIES!

I’ve discovered that I really enjoy painting minis even if the quality of the painting is questionable. I’ve 100% moved away from my idea of using painted wooden blocks to represent…things…and it’s so much quicker to draw them on the battle mat. But I still want to replace my Chessex mats with D&D Adventure Grids which I had and then donated when I got the Chessex mats except now they’re out of stock just about everywhere.

I finally ran another game with semi-painted minis on the Chessex mats and it was a hit for both players and DM.

It’s definitely been a minute since I last ran a game and I was rusty. It was also the first game I ran using D&D 5.5e rules and…..I enjoyed it. A lot actually. Obviously there’s a learning curve but I think I did good enough that I’m not unhappy with myself.

I really can’t wait until Wizards release new monster and spell cards. I might need to photocopy pages out of the Monster Manual in the meantime because I do not like flipping back and forth through it.

I really need to figure out how to manage NPCs in modern D&D. I get the “use a template from the Monster Manual” but that just adds another thing I flip through the Monster Manual for. Plus some of those templates are terrible. Looking at you various Mages. This is another thing I’ve added to my actually shrinking list of “Things I need to make more like BX D&D”. Maybe I should make a page here for this? That might be fun.

I tried the Beadle & Grimms “Inish” bean bag things. I can totally see how they would work at the right table, and maybe if I didn’t have so many damn dirty apes NPCs it would be better but I think it’s not me. I’ve instead devised my own derived solution for initiative tracking that I’ll write about another time.

What else? Hmm…

I’ve come to terms with my accumulation of “DM Kit” things. I don’t think I have too many things. I have enough of what I need. I’m still tweaking these things as I discover more about my DM style and requirements but I truely feel I’m almost there. That’s another thing for another post in another time in a dungeon far, far away under a castle that the Princess is most definitely not in.

Condition rings/tokens/markers/whatever are fantastic.

I heart my inspiration tokens. Are they too big? Yes. Are they way too heavy? Absolutely. But man were my kids excited when they had one handed to them. And anyway they’re huge gold medallions what’s not to love….other than the weight….and size….I can can still fit the seven that I have in my three section pencil case.

My Mörk Borg style D&D module creation is working really well for me but manually creating these makes my hand tired. I’ll be switching to using a computer to do these…when I get a computer again.

I’m stopping myself there otherwise this will keep going like the song that doesn’t end.
