Another Session Completed
We just about finished The Journey to Hommlet over the weekend. I say just about because while the watchtower is done with they haven’t actually reached Hommlet yet. But after about two and a bit hours of game time and having both kids actually sit through dispersing of treasure and XP FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER I didn’t want to push my luck and chose to end it there.
The module was a lot of fun and I managed to even make overland travel fun. While the module itself is not vintage the style is and yet it worked perfectly well being run in 5.5e as expected because it’s a module and doesn’t care what the ruleset is.
After I run a game I always mentally go over what I think did and didn’t work and get some general feedback from my kids. This was probably one of the better games I’ve run but there’s still some bits that I need to work on. My initiative tracker was amazing and reduces the mental load on initiative tracking to basically zero, even my kids thought it made things easier so a big tick there. I made up some basic NPC cards that also worked really well. They need tweaking but the proof of concept gets a big tick from me. Tied to this was my start on redoing the Mage template which was better but still needs work.
The medallion inspiration tokens continue to be a bane and blessing. They’re still heavy and cumbersome but the players love them.
My grasp of modern D&D rules is slightly better than last time but is still the biggest hurdle to the game flow. Both kids have decided to multiclass so there’s some out of game reading I’m going to need to do for this. I’ve decided that I’m going to plough ahead with The Temple of Elemental Evil and maybe even more pre-made modules afterwards but this is all learning for myself and my kids and is in pocket universe Greyhawk not the campaign world that will eventually be the persistent world.
I’ve also decided to “Greybrew” my world. It’s going to be essentially Greyhawk except where it’s not. I’ll write up an overview for myself and might end up posting it out of interest. This is coming from liking Greyhawk enough and the history that’s already there but still wanting to build my own world. I’ll be bringing elements of the Nentir Vale/Nerath/4e Points of Light setting over to Greyhawk along with bits I was been building for my home brew world, hence “Greybrew”.
So fun times ahead for me. Getting a computer again can’t come quick enough 😅
